Tormans Cyclo Cross Te--- World Cup Hulst Race

The circuit in Hulst (Zealand) with its famous mill welcomed the thirteenth World Cup of the season this Sunday, only a stone’s throw away from the North Sea where the race was held last year. The delegation of Tormans Cyclo Cross Team was composed of nine riders and participated in both Elite races, the only ones organized because of the pandemic restrictions.

Young women Zoe Bäckstedt and Marie Schreiber, 17 and 18 years old, were the first ones to race on the grass which was spared of the rainfall and mud. The rider from Luxembourg concluded the six laps in 25th position, preceding the British rider by two places. Bäckstedt finished her fourth race in one week in 27th place.

The seven male representants of the team then started their World Cup at 15h05. Quinten Hermans battled for fourth place for a long time, but finished 7th in the end. He was almost accompanied by Kevin Kuhn in the top 10 as the Swiss champion took 12th place. Just behind, young Emiel Verstrynge impressed again by finishing 14th. Together with Joran Wyseure they were the two Belgian selected U23 riders for this Elite World Cup race. Wyseure crossed the line in 29th place, after his U23 teammate Théo Thomas who finished 24th. Thomas Mein took 32nd place. Corné van Kessel was forced to abandon with a back problem as a consequence of his crash one day before in Baal.

INTERVIEW

Théo Thomas

Today’s performance makes me smile, especially after last week’s stomach problems. I was able to eat normally again and since then I reached my normal level again in training, which was also clear today in the race. I will remember my good feeling rather than the result, because I’m convinced that I was able to do better. I was victim of an incident as van der Poel toucher my derailleur and I couldn’t shift anymore. What also makes me happy today is the presence of my family next to the support of the team. It’s always nice to have them close to me. They followed me to Belgium after the the festive days and they will also be present at the French national championships. So all conditions are good for a nice performance in Liévin!
